What is a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?
A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a secure digital key issued by a Certifying Authority (CA) under the Information Technology Act, 2000, to validate the identity of the holder. It contains the holder's name, PIN code, country, email address, date of issue, and the CA's name. DSCs are used to electronically sign documents, authenticate identity on government portals, and establish the sender's identity.
DSCs are classified into three classes: Class 1 is for individuals verifying email (least assurance, rarely used for compliance). Class 2 is for individuals and organisations filing documents with government portals - it verifies identity against a trusted, pre-verified database (Aadhaar eKYC). Class 3 is the highest assurance level, used for e-tendering, e-auctions, and other high-value transactions where the stakes are high.
DSCs are issued on USB tokens (hardware dongles) or as downloadable .pfx files. For MCA filings (SPICe+, DIR-12, AOC-4, MGT-7) and GST registration, Class 2 DSC is mandatory. For government e-tendering (eProcurement portals like GeM, NIC, state portals), Class 3 DSC is required. For DGFT (import/export) filings, a DGFT-specific DSC is required.
Class 2 vs Class 3 DSC: which one do you need?
Choose the right DSC class based on your use case. Class 2 is for most compliance filings; Class 3 is for e-tendering.

How DSC application works
Applying for a DSC involves selecting the right Certifying Authority, completing identity verification, and receiving the certificate on a USB token or as a downloadable file.
Select DSC class and Certifying Authority
Choose between Class 2 (for MCA, GST, IT filings) and Class 3 (for e-tendering, e-auction). We recommend the appropriate CA (eMudhra, Sify, nCode, or Safescrypt) based on your use case and budget. Each CA has slightly different pricing and delivery timelines.
Complete identity verification (eKYC or physical KYC)
For Class 2 individual DSC: Aadhaar-based eKYC is the fastest route - enter your Aadhaar number, verify with OTP on your linked mobile, and upload a photo. For Class 3 or organisational DSCs: physical presence or video KYC with the CA's registered office is required.
DSC issuance and USB token delivery
Once identity verification is complete, the CA issues the DSC within 30-60 minutes. For USB token DSCs, the token is shipped to your registered address (1-3 business days). For .pfx DSCs, the file is emailed along with the password (sent separately via SMS).
Install and start using your DSC
Install the DSC driver (available from the CA's website), insert the USB token, and configure it on your browser. For MCA filings, install the MCA e-filing utility and register your DSC. For GST, link your DSC on the GST portal under your profile settings.
You can apply for DSC directly through any licensed CA (eMudhra, Sify, etc.). Our value is in recommending the right CA for your use case, handling Aadhaar eKYC issues (name mismatch, mobile not linked to Aadhaar), and ensuring the DSC works correctly with MCA and GST portals. Aadhaar name mismatches are the single most common reason for DSC application rejection.
DSC application timeline
Most Class 2 DSCs are issued within the same day. Class 3 DSCs take slightly longer.
| Stage | Duration |
|---|---|
| DSC class selection and CA recommendation | 10 minutes |
| Application form + Aadhaar eKYC / physical KYC | 15-30 minutes |
| CA verification and DSC issuance | 30-60 minutes |
| USB token delivery (if applicable) | 1-3 business days |
DSC via Aadhaar eKYC (Class 2 individual) is typically issued within 1-2 hours. USB token delivery adds 1-3 business days depending on your location. Class 3 DSC requires physical KYC - add 1-2 extra days.

DSC pricing varies by class, issuing CA, and validity period. Government fee is set by the Controller of Certifying Authorities.

Why DSC is essential for Indian businesses
Legal validity
- DSC provides the same legal validity as a physical signature under the IT Act, 2000 - accepted in all Indian courts(IT Act, 2000, Section 3 & 35A)
- Digitally signed documents cannot be altered after signing - tamper-proof and auditable
- Required for all MCA filings by companies and LLPs under the Companies Act, 2013
Single DSC, multiple portals
- One Class 2 DSC works across MCA, GST, income tax, and other government portals - no separate DSC needed per portal
- Class 3 DSC works across all GeM, NIC, and state government e-procurement portals
- DSC eliminates the need for physical signatures and couriering documents to government offices
Security and convenience
- DSC is password-protected and stored on a USB token - cannot be misused without the password and physical token
- DSC renewal is quick - most providers offer instant renewal via eKYC without re-verification
- Multiple directors/officials can each have their own DSC for independent authorization
Common DSC application mistakes
Name mismatch between PAN, Aadhaar, and DSC application
The name in your PAN, Aadhaar, and DSC application must be exactly the same (including spelling, spacing, and middle name). Even a minor difference causes rejection. Use the name exactly as it appears on your PAN.
Mobile number not linked to Aadhaar
Aadhaar eKYC requires an OTP sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. If your mobile is not linked, update it on the UIDAI portal first - this takes 7-10 days. Alternatively, use the face-authentication option if available.
Using Class 1 DSC for MCA/GST filings
Class 1 DSC is only for email verification and is NOT accepted for MCA, GST, or e-tendering. Ensure you apply for Class 2 or Class 3 depending on your use case.
Losing the USB token or forgetting the password
Treat the USB token like a physical signature - store it securely. If lost, immediately apply for DSC revocation (kill password) from your CA to prevent misuse. There is no way to recover a lost token's password.
Letting DSC expire without renewal
An expired DSC cannot be used for any filing. Set a renewal reminder 30 days before expiry. Most CAs offer quick renewal via Aadhaar eKYC without requiring physical presence again.
Every rejection above has a fix - most come down to how the innovation note is written, not the business itself. Most applicants don't know that until after the rejection.
If you have already been rejected, or want to make sure it does not happen, the 15-minute call below is the fastest path.
DSC compliance calendar
DSC itself has minimal ongoing requirements - mainly timely renewal before expiry.
| Form | Trigger | Due date |
|---|---|---|
| DSC renewal | Before expiry | 30 days before DSC expiry date |
| DSC revocation (if token lost/damaged) | Immediately upon loss | Apply for kill password within 24 hours |
| DSC re-issuance (after revocation) | When needed again | New application required after revocation |

Frequently asked questions
A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic form of your physical or handwritten signature, issued by a licensed Certifying Authority under the Information Technology Act, 2000. It validates your identity for electronic transactions and is mandatory for filing documents on MCA, GST, income tax, and e-tendering portals.
Company directors and authorized signatories (for MCA filings like SPICe+, AOC-4, MGT-7, DIR-12), chartered accountants and company secretaries (for client filings), GST practitioners, income tax e-filers, vendors bidding on government e-tendering portals (GeM, NIC), and importers/exporters filing on DGFT portal.
Class 2 is for individuals and organisations filing on government portals (MCA, GST, income tax). It verifies identity against a trusted database. Class 3 is the highest assurance level - required for e-tendering, e-auction, and GeM portal. For most business compliance (MCA, GST, IT), Class 2 is sufficient.
For Class 2 individual DSC via Aadhaar eKYC: 30-60 minutes for issuance after eKYC completion. USB token delivery adds 1-3 business days. For Class 3 DSC requiring physical KYC: 2-5 business days including the in-person verification step.
DSCs are valid for 1, 2, or 3 years - you choose at the time of application. Before expiry, you must renew the DSC to continue using it for filings. Renewal is typically faster than the initial application since identity has already been verified.
A USB token (also called a dongle or ePass) is a hardware device that stores your DSC securely. It looks like a small USB drive and requires a password to access the certificate. For Class 3 DSC, a USB token is mandatory. For Class 2, you can choose between a USB token and a downloadable .pfx file.
A digital signature is the act of signing a document electronically. A DSC is the certificate that enables and validates that digital signature - it is the credential that proves your identity. You need a valid DSC to create a legally valid digital signature under the IT Act.
Yes. A single Class 2 DSC works across MCA (SPICe+, AOC-4, MGT-7, DIR-12, CHG-1), GST (registration, returns), income tax (e-filing), and other government portals. You register the same DSC on each portal separately.
Immediately apply for a kill password (revocation) from your Certifying Authority. This permanently disables the DSC so it cannot be misused. Then apply for a new DSC. If the USB token is password-protected, the risk is lower, but revocation is still recommended.
DSC is not mandatory for GST registration for most taxpayers - it is required for certain categories: (a) companies and LLPs, (b) authorised signatories applying on behalf of the entity, (c) GST practitioners. Individual proprietorships can use Aadhaar-based OTP authentication instead.
Class 2 DSC verifies identity against a trusted pre-verified database (Aadhaar eKYC) and is used for MCA, GST, and income tax filings. Class 3 DSC requires physical or video KYC with a registered CA and is used for e-tendering, e-auction, and high-value transactions requiring the highest assurance level.
Yes. Foreign nationals and NRIs can apply for DSC by submitting their passport copy, overseas address proof, and a passport-size photo. For Class 2, Aadhaar eKYC is not available - physical or video KYC with the CA is required. At least one director of an Indian company must be a resident (stayed 182+ days in India).
Download the USB token driver from your Certifying Authority's website (eMudhra, Sify, etc.). Install the driver, insert the USB token, and open the DSC signer utility. The default password is usually provided by the CA. For MCA filings, also install the MCA e-filing utility and import your DSC. For GST, use the DSC signer available on the GST portal.
Yes. You can have multiple DSCs - for example, a Class 2 DSC for MCA/GST filings and a separate Class 3 DSC for e-tendering. Each DSC is linked to your identity and can be used for its specific purpose. There is no limit on the number of DSCs a person can hold.
Name errors can only be corrected by applying for a new DSC - the existing DSC cannot be modified. Before applying, double-check that your name in the DSC application exactly matches your PAN and Aadhaar. If there is a mismatch, your DSC will be rejected during verification by the CA.
