What is Import Export Code (IEC)?
The Import Export Code (IEC) is a mandatory 10-digit alphanumeric registration number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is the primary document required for any Indian business or individual engaged in import or export of goods and services.
IEC is PAN-linked, meaning each PAN holder is entitled to only one IEC. This eliminates the possibility of duplicate registrations and creates a unified trade identity linked directly to your tax identity. The code does not expire - it remains valid for the lifetime of the holder, with no annual renewal requirement.
An IEC is needed for: customs clearance of imports and exports at ports and airports; receiving export incentives under the Foreign Trade Policy; opening a foreign currency account; participating in international trade fairs; and claiming duty drawbacks and other export benefits.

Register on the DGFT portal (dgft.gov.in) or ICEGATE. Create your user ID and link it to your PAN. Verify your PAN details before proceeding.
Fill the IEC application (ANF 2A)
Complete the online application form with: entity details, PAN, address, bank information, nature of business, and authorised signatory details. Ensure all details match your documents exactly.
Upload documents and sign with DSC
Upload all required documents: PAN, Aadhaar, address proof, incorporation certificate, and photo. Digitally sign the application using your Class 2 or 3 DSC.
Pay the government fee
Pay ₹500 online through the DGFT portal payment gateway. Keep the payment receipt for your records.
Receive your IEC certificate
DGFT processes the application in 2-3 working days. The IEC certificate is generated electronically and sent to your registered email. Download it from the DGFT portal.
Applying for IEC yourself on the DGFT portal costs only ₹500 in government fees. Why IEC applications get rejected - and how to avoid it
Paste your IEC rejection notice or error message below and our AI will analyse the specific issues and suggest fixes.
This is AI-generated guidance based on common IEC rejection patterns. Always confirm with your DGFT consultant before acting on these suggestions.
Why your business needs an IEC

- Mandatory for customs clearance - imports and exports cannot proceed without IEC at any port or airport
- Required for all export incentive claims - MEIS/RoDTEP, EPCG, Advance Authorisation, Duty Drawback
- Needed to open a foreign currency account with any Indian bank
Business benefits
- Enables participation in international trade fairs, buyer-seller meets, and overseas exhibitions organised by DGFT
- Qualifies you for EPCG scheme - import machinery and capital goods at reduced customs duty
- Makes you eligible for Duty Drawback - refund of customs duty paid on export production inputs
- Enables RoDTEP claims - reimbursement of all embedded taxes and duties on exports
Practical advantages
- Lifetime validity - no annual renewal, no recurring compliance cost
- One IEC per PAN - no need for multiple registrations
- Free amendments for address, bank details, and authorised signatory
- Online management through DGFT portal
Common IEC registration mistakes
Incorrect PAN entered in the application
PAN details must exactly match the PAN card. Even a single character mismatch causes automatic rejection.
Not having a DSC before starting the application
DSC must be obtained and linked to your DGFT user ID before signing the application. Get your DSC first - it takes 1-2 days.
Using inconsistent address across documents
The address on PAN, Aadhaar, bank proof, and DGFT application must all be consistent. Mismatched addresses trigger verification queries.
Applying for multiple IECs on the same PAN
DGFT strictly allows one IEC per PAN. Applying for a second IEC will cause both applications to fail.
Not updating IEC after address/bank changes
IEC must be updated within 30 days of any change in address, bank, or authorised signatory. Failure to do so can lead to IEC suspension.
Every rejection above has a fix - most come down to how the innovation note is written, not the business itself. Most applicants don't know that until after the rejection.
If you have already been rejected, or want to make sure it does not happen, the 15-minute call below is the fastest path.
IEC compliance requirements after registration
IEC has minimal ongoing compliance, but the trade activities it enables require attention.
| Form | Trigger | Due date |
|---|---|---|
| IEC renewal | Not required | Lifetime validity |
| IEC amendment (change of details) | Within 30 days of change | 30 days from change |
| IEC cancellation / surrender | When stopping trade | Anytime via DGFT portal |
| Annual Exporter-Importer Profile update | Annually | 30 April each year |
| RoDTEP / MEIS claims | Per shipment | Within specified time limits per shipment |

Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit alphanumeric registration number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is mandatory for every business or individual engaged in importing or exporting goods or services from India. The IEC is PAN-linked and has lifetime validity.
Yes, IEC is mandatory for all importers and exporters of goods and services. This includes individuals, proprietorships, partnership firms, companies, LLPs, and service exporters. Very limited exceptions exist (personal courier shipments below threshold values).
Apply online on the DGFT portal (dgft.gov.in) or ICEGATE portal. Create a user account linked to your PAN, fill the ANF 2A application form, upload required documents, pay ₹500 fee, and sign with DSC. Processing takes 2-3 working days. Bizeneed handles the entire process.
IEC has lifetime validity - it does not require annual renewal. Once issued, it remains valid until cancelled, surrendered, or suspended by DGFT. You only need to amend it if there is a change in address, bank details, or authorised signatory.
The government fee for IEC registration is ₹500, paid online on the DGFT portal. Amendments (change of address, bank, authorised signatory) are free. IEC cancellation or surrender also has no fee.
PAN Card, Aadhaar Card, cancelled cheque, Digital Signature Certificate (Class 2 or 3), business address proof (utility bill / rent agreement / NOC), incorporation/partnership/proprietorship certificate, and passport-size photo. Companies and LLPs need additional documents like COI and MOA.
Yes. Individual proprietors can apply for IEC using their personal PAN and Aadhaar. The IEC is issued in the name of the proprietor and is valid for all their import/export activities.
Yes. NRIs and foreign nationals can apply for IEC. They need a notarised passport, proof of overseas address, and a DSC. If the business operates from India, an Indian address proof is also needed.
IEC amendments (address change, bank change, authorised signatory change, etc.) are made online on the DGFT portal. Submit the amendment form with supporting documents. No government fee is charged. Processing takes 3-5 working days.
To surrender IEC, file the surrender form on the DGFT portal with a declaration that there are no pending export obligations. The IEC will be cancelled. A cancelled IEC cannot be used for any further import or export transactions.
Three main categories: (1) Merchant Exporter - procures from domestic manufacturers for export, (2) Manufacturer Exporter - produces goods and exports them directly, (3) Service Exporter - exports services like IT, BPO, consulting. All three require a valid IEC.
AD Code (Authorised Dealer Code) is registered with customs at each port where you export. It tells customs which bank to credit export proceeds to. AD Code is separate from IEC but is required for export operations. We assist with AD Code registration as part of our Standard and Premium packages.
IEC is PAN-linked, so each PAN has one IEC. If you have multiple businesses under the same PAN, you can add branch or factory details to the same IEC. For separate IECs, each business needs a separate PAN.
Exporting without IEC is a violation of the Foreign Trade Policy. Customs will not clear your shipment. You cannot claim any export benefits, incentives, or duty drawbacks. Your goods may be detained at the port, causing financial losses and delays.
