What is HRA Exemption?
HRA (House Rent Allowance) is a component of salary paid by employers to employees for accommodation. Under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act, HRA received by employees is eligible for partial or full exemption from tax, provided the employee is paying rent for residential accommodation.
The HRA exemption is the lowest of: (1) Actual HRA received from employer, (2) 50% of basic salary (for metro cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata) or 40% of basic salary (for other cities), (3) Actual rent paid minus 10% of basic salary.
Under the new tax regime (FY 2024-25 onwards), HRA exemption is not available. Therefore, the tax regime comparator should factor in HRA when comparing old vs new regime.
